The character of God is love, generosity, kindness, mercy, goodness, holiness. It makes sense to say if we are in Him and He is in us that we would begin to display these same kinds of characteristics. I think religion somehow pulls us out of that truth. It makes being a Christian an academic pursuit with performance as a goal instead of restored relationship with God resulting in actual character traits being changed. Similar to learning how to test well in school by memorizing the answers without understanding the subject.

I/we need to be restored to humanity as God intended. With the character traits of our heavenly Father in place.
Character defines behavior. It is true that we are not perfected in this divine character yet but we should be seeing signs of this transformation in our lives. The fruitful effect of time spent with God, Him rubbing off on us.

“Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?”
